Down bed pillows have historically been reserved for the noble and rich. Historically poor people had straw and other fiber type pillows.
Nowadays, we are lucky enough that most people can get a down bed pillow. Down has the advantage of naturally molding with your head and neck. The other advantage is that it will keep you warm.
