Down Fill Power

Do you already have the power of down?  There are many types and qualities of down.  The way to judge them is with a fill power rating.

The scale goes from 400-850.  Most items under 400 are not rated because the fill is so thin.  Most manufacturers sell in the 550 range and move up from there.  The cost varies dramatically.  An 850 fill may be five to ten times more expensive than a 550 fill.

What does fill power mean.  It means that one ounce of down will cover the rating in volume.  For example, one ounce of 850 fill power down will fill an 850 square inch container.  That’s a lot.

The best quality down comes from cold weather geese and the Eider Duck.
