How to Wash a Down ComforterThe down comforter isn’t something you just throw in the wash once a week. It is an item that is cleaned only occasionally and with much care. The reason is that the feathers can come out, the feathers can lose loft, and the feathers can bunch up. Consider how often a duck or goose gets its feathers wet. It seems like you could wash it a lot, but in reality the feathers of a comforter aren’t constantly oiled and manually fluffed. The best way to wash a down comforter is with cold soap and water and by hand. Then, hang it out to dry on a flat surface. Check to see that feathers aren’t getting bunched up. If they are, try to spread loft them in the drying process. If you really don’t want to do all this, take it to the dry cleaners. Whatever you do, don’t wash your down comforter in a top load washer. This will tend to rip the comforter apart. You may wish to get a duvet or comforter cover. In this way, you can wash the cover any time you wish in a regular washing machine.
